The City of West Fargo Public Works Department wants to remind the public to “be nice to our pipes.” Only toilet paper should be flushed.
“We have already faced issues with our lift station pumps due to clogging from rags,” Public Works Director Matt Andvik said. “All wipes and disposable cleaning products belong in the trash. If products that don’t belong in the toilet get flushed, it can cause problems in homes and clog the city’s sewer system.”
Andvik notes that wipes advertised as “flushable” also cause septic and sewage issues and should go into the trash.
In the interest of public safety and the safety of City of West Fargo employees, the following changes are in place for garbage pickup until further notice:
Garbage that does not fit into garbage collection bins needs to be bagged and tied to for collection. Any loose garbage will be left curbside.
Large items, such as couches or appliances, will only be collected curbside on Fridays. A Public Works truck will drive all routes each Friday to collect these items. Residents are encouraged to have the materials at the curb from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on their regular garbage day for sanitation crews to mark the location for Friday pick up.
To allow for extra garbage disposal, City of West Fargo Public Works Department has extended weekend hours at the transfer station located at 1620 Main Ave. W in West Fargo. The transfer station will open 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. These hours will remain in effect until further notice to accommodate extra disposal of garbage during the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition to garbage, residents may haul branches, household waste, building materials and furniture to this location.
The City of West Fargo encourages residents to follow the guidelines of Fargo Cass Public Health, North Dakota Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention at this time.
