The City of West Fargo is excited to announce a partnership with the City of Fargo to provide residents the opportunity to recycle electronics. From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 5, residents of West Fargo are able to take electronics, such as televisions, computers and DVD players, to the Fargo Solid Waste Facility at 2301 Eighth Ave. N. in Fargo, to recycle. Each resident may recycle two items at this event with proof of residency.

If residents are unable to attend the recycling event, the Household Hazardous Waste Facility at 606 43 ½ St. N., accepts one computer set as well as one television per resident, per month.

“We don’t collect these materials from the curb as they need to be disposed of in a specific manner,” said Tom Clark, City of West Fargo sanitation manager. “This is a great opportunity for residents to dispose of electronics while ensuring they are recycled instead of adding to a landfill.”

This event will occur the Saturday before the annual metrowide Cleanup Week, May 7-11. During Cleanup Week, residents are encouraged to spring clean and place unwanted items out for pickup on their collection day. This includes items that residents usually would be charged a fee for curbside collection, like large appliances, tires and excessive garbage. Clark also cautions homeowners that not all materials can be set on the curb for pick up during Cleanup Week.

“Just like the electronics, household hazardous wastes, dirt, concrete and yard waste are materials that need to be disposed of properly to protect the public and keep materials out of the landfill,” said Clark.

Household hazardous waste includes items labeled danger, toxic, poisonous, corrosive or flammable, and can be anything from adhesives and sealants to computers and electronics. If household hazardous materials are compacted they turn into a hazardous gases that sanitation workers and nearby public can inhale. Therefore, these materials should be brought to the City of Fargo’s Household Hazard Waste Facility at 606 43 ½ Street N. in Fargo. Residents are also asked not to include yard waste in their Cleanup Week piles. The City of West Fargo has four yard waste drop-off sites throughout the city. The yard waste is composted and available for residents to pick up one free yard of compost and one free yard of wood chips during special giveaway events in the spring. “It is totally unnecessary for yard waste to be sent to the landfill,” said Clark. “This materials is perfect for creating compost, which not only reduces the burden on landfills but creates a useful, reusable material for our residents to use.
