[ARCHIVED] Westbound I-94 Sheyenne Street bridge opens to traffic

With the 2018 North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) project work nearing completion, the two-year Interstate 94 (I-94) and Sheyenne Street interchange reconstruction zone will soon enter winter suspension.

Starting today Monday, November 5, the new westbound I-94 bridge over Sheyenne Street and westbound loop ramp to southbound Sheyenne Street are complete and have opened to carry traffic in West Fargo.

Contractors have shifted traffic to have one driving lane open on each side of eastbound and westbound I-94. Traffic is no longer carried head-to-head on the eastbound side of interstate.

Motorists wishing to exit or enter I-94 for travel at the Sheyenne Street interchange will encounter:

  • Westbound I-94 loop ramp carrying southbound Sheyenne Street traffic
  • Temporary westbound I-94 off-ramp carrying northbound Sheyenne Street traffic

The new westbound I-94 off-ramp to northbound Sheyenne Street traffic will open to drivers when paving operations are complete and the concrete has achieved designed strength towards the end of the week, weather permitting.

When work is complete in closed driving lanes of I-94, crews will fully open two driving lanes in both direction on the interstate until the second year of the project work begins in spring. The single lane closure in both directions remain for crews to remove the temporary roadway markings and install permanent signage and pavement markings.

Drivers will still notice construction activity through the interchange while crews install new street lights, traffic signals, and grading and earthwork for new and widened Sheyenne Street roadways over the next few weeks.

The two-year project is building a new ramp configuration called a modified single point urban interchange, which will move double lanes of traffic through one stoplight in the middle of the interchange when interchange design is complete.

Throughout the first-year, the scope of work included installing new infrastructure or building a portion of the interchange structures:

  • Westbound I-94 bridge
  • Westbound loop ramp to Sheyenne Street
  • Westbound on-ramp to I-94
  • Westbound off-ramp to Sheyenne Street
  • Pedestrian box culvert under northeast quadrant of interchange
  • Storm sewer lift station
  • Underground utilities for water, storm and sanitary to connect to city systems

In spring of 2019, contractors will restart reconstruction work and focus on installing or building the remaining infrastructure to complete the new interchange design:

  • Eastbound Sheyenne Street bridge
  • Three additional interchange on and off ramps
  • Extend interchange ramp connections
  • Reconstruct Sheyenne Street under the bridges between E Beaton Drive to Christensen Drive

Motorists should continue to slow down, eliminate distractions and follow all posted signs throughout the project limits.

NDDOT and City of West Fargo appreciate your flexibility on finding better routes of travel to help traffic move through the area and improve roadways for everyone this construction season.

Adjacent Project work:

Work will continue in the adjacent City of West Fargo project segments north and south of the interchange on Sheyenne Street between East Beaton Drive to 13th Avenue W and Sheyenne Street between Christianson Drive to 32nd Avenue.

Sheyenne Street is open between 26th Avenue W to 32nd Avenue West (segment two) to traffic with 26th Avenue W intersection closed to mainline traffic. Traffic is head-to-head on the north side of Sheyenne Street through 32nd Avenue W intersection.
