After the snow is done flying property owners need to remember some simple snow removal rules to keep our community safe for everyone.
- Time: Once the snowfall is over, property owners have 48 hours to remove snow from any city sidewalk.
- Territory: You may only move snow to your property and public right of ways or boulevards directly adjacent to your property.
- Transfer: You cannot blow, shovel or transfer snow to streets or public property.
Property owners should also ensure sump pump hoses are not discharging onto sidewalks during the cold winter months, as this can cause dangerous icy conditions.
The city does monitor for violators of this policy, and often receives reports to investigate violations. Once a violation confirmed, the city notifies the property owner that they are in violation and what needs to be addressed. If the property owner does not clear the snow properly within 48 hours of the notice being given, the city will clear it and charge the service to the property owner.
Many people use our sidewalks throughout winter. We encourage everyone to remember to be proactive in keeping the sidewalks safe after snowfalls. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact the Code Enforcement office at 701-433-5400 or ce@westfargond.gov. Suspected violations can also be reported using the YourGOV app or website. In a few simple steps, YourGOV users can submit common issues — such as snowy sidewalks, potholes, vandalism, street light outages — complete with location, details and photos. Once submitted, YourGOV will automatically deliver requests to the city where they are reviewed and routed for proper handling.
