[ARCHIVED] West Fargo Police Department finalizes internal investigation of Sergeant Denis

Patches

The West Fargo Police Department has concluded its internal investigation into the Feb. 24, 2019, off-duty arrest of Sergeant Ryan Denis. As a result of the internal investigation, Denis has been demoted from his supervisory position to a patrol officer and will serve a 15-day, unpaid suspension effective today.

On March 20, 2019, Sergeant Denis pleaded guilty to Actual Physical Control of a Vehicle while Under the Influence of Intoxicating Liquor. Officer Denis is also required to follow all sentencing requirements from his criminal proceeding as part of the disciplinary actions from the internal investigation.

“Law enforcement is held to a high standard due to the position of trust we hold and the enormous responsibilities we are given in the community. Though it is true that we are human and can make mistakes, driving while under the influence of alcohol is something that will never be condoned within our department. This is why Officer Denis’ disciplinary actions include both a demotion and unpaid suspension. Our department will continue to remain both accountable and transparent to the residents of West Fargo that we proudly serve every day,” said West Fargo Police Department Chief Heith Janke.

Because this is a personnel matter, the West Fargo Police Department will not be providing further comment on this matter.
