By Monday, August 5, through traffic will be able to use Beaton Drive from Sheyenne Street to Ninth Street/Veterans Boulevard intersections with underground work and paving operations complete. Temporary traffic signals will remain in use at Beaton Drive and Sheyenne Street upon restoring through traffic at the intersection.

This week south of the Interstate 94 (I-94) interchange crews started on the last major stretch of roadway removals and reconstruction of the existing Sheyenne Street in the City of West Fargo’s Sheyenne Street Segment 2 project limits (West Beaton Drive to 32nd Avenue W.) which required a traffic shift south of the I-94 bridges.

In both directions, all traffic is now carried head-to-head with one driving lane and dedicated turning lanes to access the interstate on the eastside of Sheyenne Street from south of Beaton Drive until new Diversion Channel Bridge. Motorists will also encounter:

  • Addition of dedicated southbound left-turn lane at the temporary 21st Avenue W. entrance off Sheyenne Street
  • North half of Christianson Drive and Sheyenne Street intersection is open with new pavement

When work is complete in this stretch, these new concrete driving lanes on the east side will carry two lanes of northbound Sheyenne Street traffic along with a designated right-turn lane into the Gateway West development.

Through the southern portion of Sheyenne Street Segment 2 project limits, the traffic patterns remain the same:

  • Diversion Channel Bridge to 26th Avenue W.: Head-to-head traffic with two southbound Sheyenne Street driving lanes and one northbound driving lane.
  • 26th Avenue W. to 32nd Avenue W.: Split traffic with two Sheyenne Street driving lanes and dedicated turn lanes in each direction.

Over the next weeks, roadway, underground and bridge crews will complete in Segment 2:

  • Two 24-foot-wide concrete roadway paves north and south of interchange
  • Concrete deck pour on new westbound I-94 Bridge
  • Overlay deck pour on existing Diversion Channel Bridge
  • Beaton Drive pavement markings installed under traffic
  • Sidewalk from Beaton Drive to I-94 Bridge
  • Installation of streetlight bases
  • Concrete walls for southeast pedestrian under ramp box culvert
  • Pavement removals of existing southbound Sheyenne Street from south of northwest ramp
  • Grade roadway south of exiting 21st Avenue W. entrance to existing Diversion Channel Bridge
  • Storm sewer connections at 21st Avenue W. frontage road and under I-94 bridges

Area residents are reminder of an increase of construction noise near 32nd Avenue W. and Sheyenne Street intersection. As part of Sheyenne Street Segment 3 work, crews are sheet piling to help stabilize the slops of the intersection through early next week.

Motorists should plan for delays and congestion during the morning and evening commutes and adjust their travel plans accordingly throughout the Sheyenne Street corridor. As work progresses through the Sheyenne Street corridor, drivers are encouraged to eliminate distractions and slow down as work zone configurations may frequently shift.

The two-year Sheyenne Street corridor reconstruction project began in 2018 and will ease congestion and safety concerns in West Fargo by adding lanes to Sheyenne Street from 13th to 40th Avenue W. and reconstructing the I-94 Sheyenne Street interchange. The City of West Fargo is overseeing the project from 13th Avenue W. to 40th Avenue W. and the North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) is overseeing the interchange. Segment 1, completed in 2018, constructed a five-lane section of road from 13th Avenue W. to West Beaton Drive. A six-lane section with raised median, offset turn lanes and a new bridge over the Sheyenne Diversion is currently under construction in segment 2 from West Beaton Drive to 32nd Avenue W. Work on segment 3, from 32nd Avenue W. to past 40th Avenue W., began in 2019 and will result in a new four-lane section of road with a raised median and offset left-turn lanes.
